Barefoot, Endurance

Now we’re cooking! – Summer 2010

Welcome to the first Perseverance newsletter of 2010!

February has been a great month for South African endurance horses internationally. Not only did Charlandre El Sharif break his own world record in the President’s Cup in the UAE, running 160 km in 6 hours 21 minutes; but Liquorice*, a part-bred son of our Crabbet stallion Jaudet Silwer, won the 120 km King’s Cup in Bahrain!

Looking to the future, we’ve successfully brought the first 5 horses through Kikkuli training, and we’ll be putting them through their paces at lots of endurance rides this season. Of course, our current top horse PSV Jedi will also be performing, and the next bunch will be eased into competing later in the year.

ENDURANCE RIDES

Lucy and PSV Kandahar – hot, tired but very happy at the end of 80 km in blistering Karoo heat
We kicked off the season with a scorcher at Blakeridge last week – well over 40 degrees by the time the last riders finished! Despite the heat, Bob’s mare PSV Ibis completed well and is now out of novice and Lucy did her first full 80km on PSV Kandahar and came in smiling.

The next ride to see some Perseverance performance will be at Koffiefontein on the 20th of February. We’ll be taking PSV Jedi and PSV Mauser to this ride, and then the team will be at Queenstown the following weekend.

In March we’ll be competing at Louise Botha, where Jedi will do the FEI 120km and Mauser will be doing the FEI 80km to qualify for the Tri-Nations. Later in the month another team will be riding at Waterlea.

April is all about the Tri-Nations at Schweizer-Reinecke, with a look-in at Kimberley on the 17th to keep everyone nice and fit. And then in May we’ll also be riding at Winberg and Colesberg.

STALLIONS AT STUD

(more info and pedigrees on request)

Our senior stallion, Jaudet SILWER

Of our three stallions standing at stud on Broederstroom, Jaudet SILWER is one of the few 100% Crabbet stallions in the world. All of his forebears were bred or owned by the Crabbet Stud. The triumph of his son Liquorice at the King’s Cup in Bahrain is just proves to the world that we are right in our confidence in him. Liquorice was bred by Gideon van Niekerk prior to selling his stallion to us. Harry and Margaret Hobson bought Liquorice and produced him in endurance. Our oldest Silwer son is PSV Mercury who is as fast as his name suggests.El-Jahrousse AMIR is the only purebred foal of Timarie Prince Valiant. Amir’s dam is Jaudet Venus who is a half-sister to our own senior stallion. Amir has covered 10 Old English mares this summer so we have a lot to look forward to.

And finally, our young four year old stallion, PSV ORIENT is the proud sire of his first foal. Julie-Anne Gower’s Torstone Tahira produced a fine colt, that we named PSV Shabah to honour the memory of his maternal grandsire

MORE FOALS

Perseverance JUNO and her bay filly from Franelzi RISH
Our mares have been keeping us busy with foals the last couple of months, and we’re particularly pleased with the latest: two purebred bay fillies that Franelzi Rish has produced out of PSV Juno and Ben-Canaan Kariaha.

Our sterling senior stallion, Silwer, now has a total of five foals this season – four chestnuts and one bay – to continue his fantastic Crabbet line.

And we’re looking for names for the three most recent arrivals, all beginning with S. So if you have any good suggestions, let us know!

Finally, it’s always wonderful to hear from other people taking their horses barefoot. Just recently, we received this message from Andrea Brand: “I can honestly say that it has been stories like yours that have kept me going with the barefoot experience. At times it has been frustrating … but now I see what time and persistence has done. It has delivered an unbelievably tough hoof with a healthy leg attached! Thank you very much!!”

All the best from Bob and Laura Seegers and all the team here at Perseverance!
